Goethe’s Theory of Colors – Why Light is More Than Physics

And how it perfectly connects with Light+SoundJohann Wolfgang von Goethe was not only a poet but also a passionate natural scientist. In 1810 he published his monumental work Theory of Colors – a radical counter-position to the physics of his time dominated by Newton. While Newton split white light into rainbow colors with a prism and claimed that colors were merely wavelengths, Goethe said something completely different:

Light is simple. It is white. Colors only arise when light meets darkness.

Through a turbid medium (air, glass, water), yellow appears at the bright edge – warm, active, life-affirming. At the dark edge blue emerges – cool, calm, inward. When this effect is intensified, it becomes orange and red or violet. The highest color for Goethe was purple/red, created when light and darkness meet in the middle.Goethe distinguished three types of colors:

  • Physiological colors (what happens in the eye and consciousness – afterimages, contrasts)

  • Physical colors (rainbow, prism, turbidity)

  • Chemical colors (pigments)

Above all, he was interested in the sensory-moral effect: colors act directly on body, soul, and mind. Yellow makes us cheerful and energetic, blue calms or makes us melancholic, red excites or elevates. He developed a color wheel with complementary colors that strengthen each other – an idea that later strongly influenced painters like Kandinsky and Klee.

The Bridge to Licht+Klang (Licht+Sound)

Goethe saw a deep analogy between color and tone. He spoke of the “thoroughbass of painting” and even planned his own theory of tones. For him, light and sound were not separate phenomena but polar, living forces that touch the whole human being.

This is exactly where Licht+Klang begins.

We work with personal frequency profiles created from your date of birth, numerology, and chakra analysis. The traditional chakras have been associated with specific colors for thousands of years – precisely the field Goethe explored phenomenologically.

Our soundscapes are not ordinary music. They are precise frequency compositions that noticeably shift your inner state within minutes – exactly as Goethe described how a certain color immediately affects mood and body.

While modern physics reduces light and sound reductionistically to wavelengths and Hertz, Goethe and Light+Sound focus on the human experience:How does yellow feel? How does 432 Hz affect your nervous system? How can light and sound together create balance and transformation?

Light+Sound is the modern continuation of Goethe’s idea in the 21st century.

Instead of pigments and prisms, we use your personal frequencies and custom soundscapes – allowing light and sound to work not as separate worlds, but as a living unity.Goethe would probably have sat enthusiastically in front of one of our Frequency Reports and said:

“Finally someone who understands that light and sound belong together.”

Would you like to experience for yourself how your personal color and frequency profiles sound?
